What is SEO?

You’re reading it right now, it’s everywhere on the internet. SEO (or Search Engine Optimization) is the act of creating and optimizing content with certain keywords so that it appears higher on the list when someone uses a search engine to look for a service online.

These agencies will have made sure to include these keywords somewhere within their website and places outside their website too. This includes titles and meta descriptions, which are the first thing you see when results are displayed on a search engine.

These titles and meta descriptions are an opportunity to add in some SEO keywords, which the computer brain behind the search engine likes.

Another commonly used technique, known as backlinks, is to link resources from one website to another via articles – like this very article you’re reading now (how meta!).

SEO, Hashtags, and Other Tricks

SEO could in theory be compared to something like hashtags found on social media platforms like Instagram or Twitter. Hashtags are the traditional method used by social media accounts to attract the attention of an audience who are browsing certain topics. It helps them find the information they want quickly.

You could also compare it to the feature of using speech marks on Google. If you didn’t know about this old trick already, if you are searching for an exact phrase, you can type it within speech marks to filter out other less relevant results from the search engine.

There are a few other methods to get specific results like using the minus (-) symbol to exclude results or including a specific website URL, but they’re a bit complicated and time-consuming for the average user, which is why an SEO strategy is preferred instead. It makes searching easier and it helps businesses become noticed.

Another tip for finding exactly what you want is to omit common words and just type the most important and specific parts, which is why SEO keywords and hashtags can sometimes appear somewhat lacking incorrect grammar.

SEO Origins

Though it sounds like quite a recent development, SEO has been a thing for as long as 20 to 30 years. That kind of lasting power alone should tell you how important it has been for changing the way advertising is done.

In January 1996, Bill Gates wrote an essay that coined the phrase “Content is king”. This has now gone on to be true of SEO and SEO content.

As the most popular search engine and formerly most popular website (TikTok has just taken over), most SEO is designed with Google in mind. The search engine has become popular enough to expand to a technology company, phones, operating systems, the most used internet browser (Chrome) and it’s even invaded our vocabulary – “Just Google it”.

Combining SEO for Maximum Results
